In one of the most significant takeovers in the history of British media, Comcast-owned Sky has reached an agreement to acquire ITV’s media and entertainment division for £1.6bn. The move follows months of negotiations, which officially commenced in November of last year.

Sky Group emphasized that the acquisition is a strategic response to the shifting landscape of the UK media industry. In a formal statement, the organization noted that the market is currently experiencing a rapid and profound transformation. As competition for viewers continues to escalate, Sky stated that achieving greater scale is essential to effectively challenge global streaming giants and platforms like YouTube.

Addressing concerns regarding content, Sky assured the public that viewers will maintain access to their favorite programming. The network confirmed that popular shows such as Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Love Island, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, This Morning, Loose Women, Lorraine, and News at Ten will remain available alongside major live sporting events.

Despite this major corporate acquisition, ITV remains bound by its legal obligations. Under the terms of its public service broadcasting licence, the broadcaster is required to continue providing a free-to-air service until at least 2034.
